Some people are a bit surprised when I mention that I am an actual pastor. Then they go, "ohhh High-Proof PREACHER makes sense now." I guess you normally wouldn't think a pastor would also be an avid whiskey fan and cocktail creator dude.
As a pastor, I do understand that I need to be careful; as part of the job is often caring for people that are struggling with various vices. However, through simply sharing a drink, I've also received a lot of opportunities to interact and encourage people who wouldn't normally interact with me. I hate that religion, and Christianity specifically, can cause so much division and even oppression. It doesn't even make sense considering that it was started around a Jewish carpenter who loved people regardless of who they were or what they believed. He loved people because they were people. Period.
There isn't anything too "symbolic" about this cocktail's ingredients other than I'm a pastor that likes to drink whiskey with anyone who wants to drink with me. So here's to loving people with no conditions or ulterior motives!
2 oz blended scotch
1/2 oz smoke tea liqueur
1/2 oz yellow chartreuse
3 dashes Peychaud's bitters
2 dashes barrel-aged aromatic bitters
1/2 tsp honey syrup
Garnish: Lemon wheel & flamed cedar chip
Combine ingredients in a mixing glass and stir with ice until chilled. Strain into rocks glass over ice. Put a small cedar chip on top of a lemon wheel and float it on top of the drink. Light it on fire to add some smokey aromatics!
High-Proof Preacher original recipe
I enjoyed collaborating with Wild Roots Vodka from here in Portland, to develop some fun cocktail recipes. Wild Roots offers 7 different vodkas: 1 flagship vodka and 6 that are infused with real fruit from all over the Pacific Northwest. The real, natural flavors of local fruit make for some delicious and easy drink-making.
