This Is Not A Drill
Sotol has to be the weirdest spirit I’ve ever come across.
This incredibly vegetal spirit is made from Dasylirion or “desert spoon plant.” It primarily grows wild in Northern Mexico. Sotol is transparent, earthy and basically tastes like the desert from where it came.
I’ve mainly been sipping it and giving my friends samples while laughing at their confused faces. Here’s my first attempt at making a cocktail with the stuff. This drink is not for everyone. It has a lot of vegetal flavors going on but still super refreshing, largely thanks to the touch of grapefruit. It’s a weird drink made with a weird spirit. But I dig it.
1 ½ oz Durango Sotol
½ oz Giffard Pamplemousse
¾ oz Jalapeño-infused vodka
½ oz Sage simple syrup
Grapefruit sparkling water
I mixed the ingredients before adding to the glass but you can simply build the drink in a highball full of ice. Top with grapefruit sparking water or soda. Garnish with grapefruit zest and serve with a metal straw
